Ageism and TEFL
Are you thinking of becoming a TEFL teacher in Buenos Aires and are asking yourself if you are “too old”?
If so, you are not alone, many people are under the impression that TEFL is just for people in their 20’s and 30’s whom have just graduated college, and are taking a gap year or are looking for a great opportunity to work and travel abroad.
While becoming TEFL certified in Argentina is a great way for young people to gain experience, the misconception that age matters is simply FALSE. In fact TEFL certification is a great way to enhance and even change your life at any age.
A few facts about Ageism and TEFL
Many teachers who decide to become TEFL certified come up against ageism in there 50’s and 60’s. Much of this depends on the country in which you are looking to teach in, so it is definitely worth inquiring directly about age at the schools in your chosen destination. Although most jobs won’t specify an age limit, it is as well to let the school know when you apply how old you are to avoid issues of this matter. If by chance there is an age limit, it is possible that because of a shortage of TEFL teachers, the school will forgo their “recommended age” requirement.
English Language Schools are looking for qualified teachers that enjoy and are good at what they do, if this is you then do not worry about age. While some schools do look specifically for younger teachers, keep in mind that there are many schools that can prefer older teachers who often bring authority to the classroom as well as greater experience and style to the lessons.
You can be a successful TEFL teacher at any age,
1. Think Positive: if you want it you can have it, no matter what.
2. Be confident: you do have the skills and experience.
3. Show off: if you have a few more years under you belt, let the employer know this, show your strengths and what makes you special.
4. Sell yourself: you are unique and hard for any employer to resist.
