Use the Television to Teach English to Your Students in Buenos Aires

Believe it or not, television and video can be a fantastic tool to use while teaching English to your students in Buenos Aires.  Here is how it works:

Rent a video with English subtitles or turn on the television to a program in English with Spanish subtitles.

  • First, let your students know what they will be watching and the main theme so that they have an idea of what is going to happen next. If you can, write down some important or key vocabulary that they will be exposed to.
  • Next, have your students listen or read for different reasons. If you have a video, try to pause the video after certain stages and ask your students to describe what is going on, what specific words they heard, noticed, etc. Have them listen to the English being spoken and follow with the Spanish subtitles below, giving them a chance to see how certain expressions, phrases, and words are translated.
  • Afterwards, try to prepare some exercises to reinforce whatever your English student just learned. Whether they must ‘continue the story’, re-write what happens, summarize the video or show, etc. Anything that helps them remember what they just saw and to re-use it in their own situation.

Video or television also makes for great homework or self study for students.  Have them watch English shows with Spanish subtitles and keep a pen and note pad handy in order to write down any new words, or anything they learned.  If you know of a show that is going to air, ask them to watch it for homework and then discuss it the following class.
