Teaching TEFL in Buenos Aires; Cost of Living 2009

Before the economic crash in 2001, Buenos Aires was one of the most expensive cities in the world, comparable to Madrid, Paris, New York, and Miami. After the economic fell, the peso dropped significantly and the country and city became a very inexpensive destination however, like the people themselves, the country has put its feet back on the ground and the economy and therefore the peso is gaining strength. Today, Buenos Aires is still fairly inexpensive for most foreign currencies but with inflation, prices fluctuate regularly and randomly.
If you are teaching English in Buenos Aires in 2009, here is a little information about how much you can expect to may to live in the ‘Paris of South America’.
It is most common to rent a shared apartment with other foreigners or locals in the city. Price for a moderate room in a decent area in the city will range from about 900pesos – 1600pesos.
Food, and by that I mean groceries, will run you (for one person) about $400 pesos a month (100pesos a week).
Transportation, depending on how much you travel, should not cost anymore than 100 pesos a month, and that would include a few taxi rides as well. You will pay about .80-1.25pesos for a bus, subway, or train ride.
Entertainment can be one of the most costly expenses in Buenos Aires, so depending on your lifestyle, this can fluctuate immensely. Think of it like this:
Dinner out: 35-90 pesos.
Night at boliche: 40-200pesos
Drinks out: 30-200 pesos
Theatre/cine/concert/tango show: 40-300 pesos
Extras (cell phone, shampoo, etc) will cost you only about $40-60; these costs can be shared between roommates.
If you are careful with your pesos, it is possible to live fairly cheaply in Buenos Aires on a ‘local’ (peso) wage. If you live like a foreigner, make sure you either work more or keep a good amount of savings in your bank from back home!
