TEFL teachers in Buenos Aires: Learn to Cook Empanadas

Living abroad and teaching English in Buenos Aires requires that you learn a variety of new skills including learning how to take public transportation, speaking a bit of Spanish, dressing like a professional porteño, and a few others. Another helpful skill is learning how to cook Argentine food, so if the time comes that you are at home with nothing to eat, you can whip something together in no time at all.
One of the most famous snacks in Buenos Aires, and perhaps all of Argentina, for its easy ingredients, quick cooking time, and great taste, is the ultra delicious Empanada.
For all of you TEFL teachers in Buenos Aires that are looking for something quick to prepare in the house, here it is:
Empanada
Ingredients
Dough:
400g Flour
1 tsp Salt
175g Butter
1 – 3 tbsp Water
**Note: At ANY supermarket in the Argentina, the empanada pastry can be bought, pre-made and prepared, leaving you only with the duty of filling the empanada!
Stuffing:
450g Minced Beef/Chicken/Pork/Or extra veggies (depending on how many you make – measure yourself)
2 Onions chopped
1 tbsp Tomato Paste
1 hard boiled Egg, chopped
Salt & Pepper (or any seasoning you like)
Instructions
**Note: Ignore 1, 2, and 4 if buying pre-made empanada pastry.
1. Put the flour in a mixing bowl and mix in the butter using your fingers.
2. Add the water and mix with a spoon until the mixture combines. Use your hands to form the mix into a ball and then cover and chill for one hour.
3. Cook the beef (or others) and other ingredients and let cool slightly.
4. Preheat the oven to 200C. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface into about 3mm/1/8th inch of thickness and then cut into 8 small circles.
5. Fill the circles with the filling, and fold over the edges into half moons, securing the edges by pressing with a fork.
6. Cook for about 20-30minutes, until golden brown.
And Enjoy!
