Are you traveling to South America to teach English in Buenos Aires

If you already have, or if you are thinking of traveling to Buenos Aires, you will quickly discover that there are so many small delights to be found in this big city.

For some, the city of Buenos Aires, can seem like a place that never calms down, where the traffic is always flowing, and where, at any given time, there are hundreds of people on the street. For many, this is the attraction of Buenos Aires, for a few, it can seem overwhelming. So, no matter how it is for you, it is important to the quality of your life to find the small delights while living and teaching English in Buenos Aires.

1. Argentines greet each other with a kiss every time they meet and every time they say good bye.

2. Every meal eaten out starts with a basket of fresh bread, often warm, and always delicious.

3. Sure sometimes it is annoying, but no woman can really complain at comments like “beautiful” or “goddess” that are said at them out in public.

4. Sweet foods are part of daily life in Buenos Aires, sweet croissants for breakfast, cookies for a snack in the afternoon, pancakes with dulce de leche for desert, and there is no need to feel guilty when everyone is indulging.

5. The sight of dog walkers with 10-15 beautiful doggies, loving their daily walk, is enough to put a smile on your face every day of the week.

6. The love of fútbol; even if you do not like the spot yourself, there is something to be said for a culture that is so dedicated and proud of their home teams and literally put all of their energy and faith into it.

7. The shopping bags. No matter where you buy your clothing or accessories, no matter how big or how small the item is, you will receive a shopping back from the store that is almost nicer than whatever you are buying.

8. The laidback lifestyle. “If it doesn’t happen today, it will happen tomorrow”. It may take time to get into this grove, but believe me, it is a much smarter way to live.

9. Long days: Argentines don’t believe in the “8 hour rule” of sleeping. Meaning days in Buenos Aires are actually quite long and you can get much more done. Once you fall into the routine of getting up at 8am, eating dinner at 10pm, and finally settling into bed at 12-1am, you will see how productive your days can be.

10. The language. You may be teaching English in Buenos Aires but you will soon fall in love with the Spanish spoken here. An interesting mix of Italian influence and Argentina’s own slang, Spanish here is passionate, full of great expressions, and truly unique to other Spanish spoken in Latin America.

Enjoy!
