The TEFL classroom in Buenos Aires
Are you on your way to getting TEFL certified and thinking about where to teach your English classes?Believe it or not, where you teach your English classes does make a difference in the quality of your classes, effectiveness of your lessons, and in the overall success of your students.
If you are planning to become or are a TEFL teacher in Buenos Aires you have a few different types of job opportunities; working in a school; working in a company; or working independently. The first two supply a classroom for you. The last, however, requires you to supply your own classes room, meaning a comfortable and convenient teaching space.
The Do’s and Don’ts of ‘Classrooms’
Do invite your students to your apartment if…
a) Your apartment is clean and tidy. (No one wants to learn English when they are distracted by ‘something’ moving under a mess of dirty laundry).
b) You do not have roommates that are milling about during your lesson, hanging out with friends, or appearing for the first time in the afternoon after an obvious night of too much Fernet.
c) You have an appropriate desk or table where you can conduct the lesson. (Kitchen counters or floors are out of the question)
Do go to the house/apartment of your student if you have previously checked (with a friend/college) that the house and area is safe and secure and suitable to give a lesson. Ask in advance about roommates, possible interruptions, and pets.
Do meet your students at a bar or café if the noise level is appropriate and the meeting time is not peak lunch hour in Buenos Aires. Keep in mind that if you go to a bar or café, you will be expected to buy something in order to sit down, as will your student, however, a small price to pay if you are charging independent class prices.
