Listen and Learn with TEFL
Remember when your mother used to say, “Stop watching TV and do your homework!!”
Times have changed, now when teaching English as a second language, “watching television” can be the homework.
Television, radio, and the internet are powerful tools that can be used to help you as a TEFL teacher in Buenos Aires. To speak a language, one must first understand what is being spoken. Watching television programs, reading online, and listening to music in English will help your students understand and comprehend spoken words in English.
Teach them HOW to listen and improve comprehension:
Television:
Watch programs that are relevant and can be applied to your student’s lives; watching the news can be a bit difficult because the content may not apply. Children’s programs, sitcoms, and popular cable channels are great resources. The use of Closed Captioning, which shows the words of the program, is a great tool to practice listening and reading.
Internet:
Subscribing to blogs, newspapers, and forums are amazing tools and there are an infinite amount of materials to choose from. Not all of your students will be interested in the same subjects, give them the freedom to choose what to read, and keep them interested in learning and wanting more.
Music:
Everyone loves listening to music, and as a TEFL teacher you can use music to help your students learn English. English music is prevalent all over the world; encourage your students to listen to their favorite songs in English every day. Understanding and comprehending the lyrics will help in everyday situations.
TIP: Have your students write down any words they don’t understand, and go over them in your TEFL class, this will be a fun lesson plan or an everyday starter activity.
As a TEFL teacher, you can help your students to learn English everyday in a way that doesn’t even feel like learning, simply by using great resources like television, internet and music.
