Argentina Fútbol is headed to the 2010 World Cup

People are screaming and running through the streets, the city is alive and celebrating on an otherwise typical Wednesday evening…

What is the cause for such festivities?

On October 13th Argentina beat Uruguay 0-1 and qualified for the World Cup 2010 in South Africa.

If you are taking TEFl courses in Buenos Aires you may already be aware of the intense passion Argentines have for fútbol and how seriously they take this very competitive sport.

Good news: You don’t have to be a fútbol fanatic to enjoy this sport in Argentina.

While games are fun to watch, it’s the fans that make fútbol truly fun and enjoyable to anyone.

Argentines love their fútbol, proven by having the highest concentration of  fútbol teams in the world, and it is crucial when Teaching English in Buenos Aires to attend at least one game and experience what passion for a sport really is.

A Few Fútbol Words and Terms to Get to Know:

  • Diego Maradona: The current coach of the Argentine Team is like the Babe Ruth of Argentine Fútbol.  The hero of Argentina’s 1986 World Cup Win, Diego grew up in the slums of Buenos Aires, later gaining Argentine Super Stardom, world-wide notoriety, and playing more than 2 decades professionally.
  • Albicelestes: Team Nickname meaning White and Sky Blue, club colors
  • Ball: Balón
  • Coach: El Entrenador
  • Team: Equipo
  • Away Team: Equipo Visitante
  • Throw-in: Saque de banda
  • Score a Goal: Macar/Meter un Gol
  • Shoot at a Goal: Tirar a puerta
  • What was the score? :Como termino el partido
  • World Cup: Mundial
  • Underdog: El que tiene menos posibilidades
  • League: Liga
  • Handball: Mano
  • Forward: Delantero
  • Defender: Defensa
  • Foul: Falta
  • Corner Kick: Saque de esquina
